Greatest TV Shows of All Time

Updated: Apr 1, 2022

Binge-worthy is an understatement

1. Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is awesome. It seamlessly juggles an impossible amount of characters and storylines inside of a dangerous, medieval world. There are so many outside threats, desires, and conflicts within every episode that each second is truly extraordinary. Except for the ending. The ending sucks.

2. Breaking Bad

As a TV series full of action, crime, and suspense, Breaking Bad grips the viewer from the very first episode. The unique premise, fantastic performances, and intricate storylines easily make it a top 2 show of all time.

3. Band of Brothers

Band of Brothers takes the viewer along for the magnificent journey of Easy Company during their time serving as paratroopers in WWII. From D-day all the way to the German surrender, the show illustrates the bravery, comradery, and sacrifice of war, all while staying true to the unbelievable story of Easy Company. While it is only a ten-episode miniseries, the brilliance of the show still makes it one of the best of all time.

4. True Detective

The first season of True Detective is the greatest investigative cop show of all time. Instead of focusing on the boring, bureaucratic ongoings of police life, this limited series takes a deep dive into two very different main characters as they attempt to solve an incredible mystery. In addition, impeccable writing paired with the prowess of Matthew McConaughey makes Rustin Cohle one of the most intriguing TV characters ever.

5. Survivor

I have seen 14 seasons of Survivor which is actually less than half of this mammoth show. It is the ultimate social experiment and remains the best reality game show even after 20 years of run time. Each season is fabulously unique due to entirely new casts and themes. Medical evacuations, idols, blindsides, immunity challenges, and fire-making competitions give Survivor some of the most intense moments in television history.

6. The Haunting of Hill House

It is a tall task to keep a story about a haunted house interesting for 10 episodes, but this limited series does just that. As all horror stories should, it focuses on the characters and their realistic, personal issues. Episode 6, in particular, is a masterpiece of filmmaking as director Mike Flanagan uses long scenes and invisible cuts to make the hour-long episode look like one take. And to give this show one more piece of credit, it does, in fact, have one of the best jump scares of all time in the penultimate episode.

7. The Office

The Office was able to master awkward humor and relatability all while structuring the show as a realistic, documentary-style sitcom. The wild characters, recurring lines, and authentic relationships make this series one of the most entertaining of all time.

8. Rick and Morty

While Rick's constant negativity and sarcasm are hilarious, this show shines due to its clever ideas and episode premises. It involves futuristic technology and theories of the multiverse that are super interesting to explore. Inter-dimensional cable, Pickle Rick, and the parasites are just a few of the ingenious concepts present in the series.

9. Seinfeld

How can a show about nothing be one of the greatest sitcoms ever? Well, it has to do with relatability, humor, relationships, crazy characters, and countless other aspects. Seinfeld is such a great show simply because it does so many things really well.

10. Friday Night Lights

"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" is such a fitting mantra for this show. Friday Night Lights is set in a dusty Texas town where everyone lives and dies for the high school football team. The show largely transcends football, however, as much of the adversity our characters face revolves around family, work, class, and dashed dreams. The comradery of a locker room, the unique coach/player relationship, and the quintessential Texas high school experience make this show gripping from the very first episode.
